Easily Organize Your Photos with Post Order

Organize Wordpress Photos, image gallery, organize images, reorder photos

There are many reasons why you may want to organize WordPress photos, or change the order of your photography store’s products. You can attention to older products, or increase conversions by showcasing popular items more prominently.

Unfortunately, by default, changing the published date of each product is the only way to adjust the order of products in WordPress. The Simple Custom Post Order plugin solves this problem by making it possible to reorder your Sell Media products with a drag-and-drop interface added to the WordPress dashboard. This isn’t limited to organizing WordPress photos, and can be used with any post type.

Let’s take a look at the current method for reorganizing your products so we can compare it to the Simple Custom Post Order plugin.

How to Sort Products Without a Plugin

Without a plugin, sorting products in your photography store is a bit of a chore. Head to Sell Media > All Products in the WordPress dashboard and select any product. From the Edit Product page, locate the Publish meta box on the right-hand side of the screen – more specifically, the Published on date:

The Published On date.

By default, products are ordered based on the published date – from the most recently published to the oldest. By amending the Published on date you can change the order of your products. For example, if you want a specific product to appear first click the Edit link next to the Published on date, change it to a date that is more recent than the Published on date of any other product, click Ok, and click the blue Update button to save your changes:

Editing the Published On date.

As you can see, this is not ideal, especially if you have hundreds of products to manage. In addition, you won’t be able to preserve the original published date, which you may want to do. Fortunately, there’s a plugin that eliminates this problem.

Introducing Simple Custom Post Order

The Simple Custom Post Order plugin is true to its name. Once installed, activated, and set up correctly, it enables you to drag-and-drop any item in the list of Sell Media products right from the WordPress dashboard, allowing you to organize WordPress photos as you see fit without amending any of the product data.

A Better Way to Sort Products

First, install the Simple Custom Post Order plugin. Once the plugin is activated you’ll see a new option within your WordPress Settings panel called SCPOrder:

This screen enables you to select which post types and taxonomies you’d like to sort. You’re welcome to select any posts or taxonomies you’d like to sort, but since we’re looking to sort Sell Media products, we’ll need to check the following options:

  • Check to Sort Post Types: Sell Media
  • Check to Sort Taxonomies: Product Collections, Licences, Keywords

Once selected, click Update, and navigate to Sell Media > All Products. Hover over any product, and you’ll see the cursor change into a crosshair. To sort your products, simply click one and drag it to your preferred position:

The new product order will be visible immediately on your website and products will remain in that order unless you change the order again. Just make sure to keep Simple Custom Post Order installed and activated. If you deactivate it your products will revert to their original order.

Conclusion

There are many reasons why you may want to reorder your products, posts, or organize WordPress photos. Unfortunately, there’s not a good way to reorder products or posts built into WordPress. However, with the Simple Custom Post Order plugin, you can quickly sort your Sell Media products using a drag-and-drop interface that is easy to use and a much better option than changing the published date of each product.
