Photo Galleria Plugin for WordPress

Photo Galleria (download Photo Galleria now) is a simple, yet elegant, WordPress plugin for photographers and designers who want to beautify their WordPress photo galleries using an elegant jquery script. The Photo Galleria plugin synchronizes Galleria with WordPress’ built-in media manager. Simply upload photos as normal and the Photo Galleria plugin will create a photo gallery with fade-in and fade-out effects common on flash-based websites. All the transitions happen inline without having to navigate to multiple WordPress attachment pages. Pretty neat, eh?

Photo Galleria displays the thumbnail images that WordPress creates for you and displays the original, high resolution uploaded image. Both are constrained proportionally via css. You can control their display size via the two CSS files included with the plugin. By default, the thumbnails display at 125px by 125px square and the image displays at 950px wide. Virtually every aspect of the presentation of Photo Galleria can be controlled via CSS.

    It looks promising.
    But the gallery doesn’t display the same way depending on the chosen template. Most of the time the gallery is just plain ugly — ex: completly offset on the sidebar.

    @logicalnot – you need to modify the attached css files to make photo galleria fit the width of your site.

    I should’ve read your ‘to do’ list as I’ve just spent considerable time trying to figure out how to display the main image at load 😉

    I found this during my research:

    http://devkick.com/talk/topic/62/

    In my opinion, your plugin needs to display the main image first and glad to see it is number 1 on your to do list 😉

    Thad, I did a small change in your plugin. It may help who wants that the gallery loads the first image. Also, it gives a different markup for home and categories (just showing the first image).

    I created a discussion in your forum. Files are there.

    Thad, I would happily donate to your plugin if it displayed the main image as well as thumbs, not instead of.

    Displaying a main image is fundamental to Galleria.

    I can’t seem to figure out what I am doing wrong, the plugin wont work for me.

    I uploaded the file to plugins folder, activated it, used the google API AJAX plugin and activated that, deleted any Javascript from the header and from the Photo Galleria plug in.

    When I upload images and click insert gallery all I see is a next and previous button but I dont see any images?

    Any one any ideas what I am doing wrong?

    @garrison – This isn’t so much a plugin issue as it is a Galleria issue. To my knowledge, it is impossible to use both the “active” state and custom thumbnails. I’ve attempted to ask the developer about this, but can’t get a response….which I translate to mean it aint possible. Without the ability to use custom thumbnails, page load times dramatically increase, as does the flexibility to use thumbnail size specified from within WP.

    @Jay – check to see that you don’t have two JQUERY’s in the head of your site.

    Thanks Thad but are you saying it’s impossible to do in WordPress?

    The demo on the developer’s site shows the main image from load AND thumbnails at the same time. In essence that’s the whole selling point of Galleria.

    I’ve seen an example of Galleria being successfully implemented on this WP blog:

    http://blogthemesplus.com

    Main image loads, and then thumbnails. Is this possible to achieve with your plugin?

    @ Garrison – No, it is possible. Originally, I built the plugin with this functionality. I removed it because I wasn’t able to load custom thumbnails simultaneously with the active state. Outside of the WP code, it is easily possible to load custom thumbs and the active state.

    I personally preferred giving readers the option of choosing their own entry point. In future editions, I’ll likely package this into an option checkbox within an photo galleria admin page. This, as it stands, is the beta release.

    Is there a way to switch the position of the image and the thumbnails? say i want the thumbnails smaller and stacked to the left with the image next to it. or the image on the bottom with the thumbnails floated on top.

    where would i edit that. theres nothing in the CSS of that nature and im not too good at editing jQuery/js/php.

    any help?

    Nice try but there are some things that really don’t work well on this. First off, it loads all main images in the background so if you have multiple posts on a page, the page takes forever to load. Also, if you have multiple posts per page that have images, posts lower on the page load the main image in the space reserved for the first post. Very confusing for the user and impossible to navigate.

    My students and I are having the same problem as Jay. We’ve installed the Google AJAX plugin and deleted the two instances of javascript in the plugin.

    When the page loads, there is still a Galleria-related jQuery in addition to the one generated by the Google AJAX plugin, but I can’t see how it’s still being applied:

    jQuery(function($) {

    $(‘.gallery’).addClass(‘galleria’); // adds new class name to maintain degradability

    $(‘ul.galleria’).galleria({
    history : false, // activates the history object for bookmarking, back-button etc.
    clickNext : true, // helper for making the image clickable
    insert : ‘#main_image’, // the containing selector for our main image

    I’ve looked at my header.php file for the Options theme, but don’t see any javascript that’d be conflicting, unless it’s courtesy the Smoothgallery plugin that came with the theme, though that doens’t look like it runs jQuery.

    The plugin doesn’t work for me. While it does turn the images into thumbnails, it doesn’t make them are clickable. Also, the mouse cursor doesn’t change to a hand. And there is no big image on top.

    I have WordPress 2.8.5.

      I fixed one problem, but noticed another. I removed the auto-framing option of my theme. It added extra html, which was the plugin’s jquery code did not expect. So I can view the gallery on each post’s page now.

      The new problem I noticed is: on the home page, where the most recent blog posts are shown, the thumbnails have an error message “error loading [filename].” Maybe this one is really a bug with the plugin. Not sure. Let me know.

      By the way, I’m using plugin 0.2.2, and it’s the first time I’ve ever used the plugin.

      One more thing Jim….

      The plugin displays your medium size image. Since your medium size image is 270 pixels wide by 150 pixels tall, I imagine that it’s displaying this version, which is only slightly bigger than your thumbnails. You can easily change this to the large size image by opening up photo-galleria.php and changing line 119 from:

      <code>__abENT__lt;code__abENT__gt;__abENT__#95;__abENT__#95;abENT__abENT__#95;__abENT__#95;apos;size__abENT__#95;__abENT__#95;abENT__abENT__#95;__abENT__#95;apos; =__abENT__#95;__abENT__#95;abENT__abENT__#95;__abENT__#95;gt; __abENT__#95;__abENT__#95;abENT__abENT__#95;__abENT__#95;apos;medium__abENT__#95;__abENT__#95;abENT__abENT__#95;__abENT__#95;apos;,__abENT__lt;__abENT__#8260;code__abENT__gt;</code>

It took a while because of the number of images on my site but seems to have done the trick!

    On the home page, where the most recent blog posts are shown, the thumbnails have an error message “error loading [filename]” and the big image does not show.

    I was trying to get this to work on wordpress (2.8.6) on a ‘Page’ (not ‘Post’). The problem was it didn’t always autoload the first large image in the gallery, you had to click the thumbnail to show the first large image. (problem was only in IE6, 7, 8.)

    Solution was to use Alexander’s version posted above, and change where he wrote is_single to is_page, now seems to be all good across browsers with galleries on ‘Pages’. (warning this will break it for ‘Posts’ though and maybe other locations, Im not using any posts, just pages).

      I use the Galleria in the F8-lite theme. With the Galleria 0.2.5. everything just worked fine but after I upgraded to 0.2.7. in a page it doesn`t show the big pictures anymore even if I cklick on them… how can I get back to Galleria 0.2.5?

    2. Gaah Avatar

      This might have already been answered, but in response to Levi, instead of changing is_single() to is_page(), you can add a conditional comment is_single() or is_page(). Then below (line 92) change !is_single to !is_single() & !is_page() to allow for pages as well.

      I ran into a similar problem and this seemed to fix it.

    I’ve searched high and low for information on the galleria plugin, for not so computer savvy people such as myself. For the life of me, I don’t understand what has to be done once it’s installed in the WP plugins. Can I only use the WP media uploader to work with this plugin? Can I not use URLs? And do I just need to type [galleria] to call out the plugin? Gargh. I don’t know about the via URL stuff.

    First of all, I just love this Galleria and really want to replace the dumb flash gallery that I am using right now. But there is one problem that I really want to see it changed.

    This Photo Galleria plugin works great when i view it at the post. But there is a big problem. When I go to my archive posts (from the category tab), I can see all the thumbnails in every post. But when I click on the thumbnail, it takes me to the attachment/file of the picture; and that's so not what I want. I want to know if there is a way to change the hover link of the thumbnail so when I click, it takes me to that particular post id.

      For those wondering how to handle this problem, I went ahead and used an IE conditional statement so the plugin wasn’t loaded in IE 6. Now the site loads up thumbnails in IE6 that users can click on. While the plugin doesn’t work for IE6 users it still gives them an appropriate user experience.

        Yeah, I think you’re missing something. All you should need to do is:

        1. Install the plugin
        2. Insert a gallery of images into a post or page. (Click INSERT GALLERY
        button after uploading them into WordPress)

        If it isn’t working, you might have either a theme or plugin conflict. In
        that case, switch to the TwentyTen theme to see if that fixes it. If it
        does, it’s a theme conflict. Deactivate your plugins one by one to see if
        it’s a plugin conflict.

    I had a partial-second black screen flashing when a person loaded a new page on my site. After troubleshooting my settings and a number of plugins, I discovered it is caused by the Photo Galleria plugin. Or, perhaps the plugin is conflicting with another plugin on my site. Not exactly sure, but I do know that disabling the plugin fixes the issue. I disabled all multimedia plugins, with the remainder having to do with security (disabled some of the more active ones), a contact form, and a few utility type plugins.

    FYI. Hope this helps. Appreciate the effort that has been put into this plugin.

    I really, really like this plugin and the clean and simple look it gives galleries. The one thing that renders it completely useless for me though is the inability to have multiple galleries on one page. We spend so much time getting our sites to look good and consistent – to build a plug-in that completely breaks any design you may be trying to achieve makes no sense to me. I understand that if someone were to have 10 galleries on one page, with 10 large images in each gallery, the page would take a long time to load – but many users know how to properly re-size images and control how many posts are visible on a single page. Why not give them the option to have multiple galleries (the default could still be one, with warnings against changing it) instead of limiting an otherwise great plug-in to the lowest common-denominator?

    Hi. This plugin is cool. The images are placed at 50%. That’s cutting off the top and bottom. So I set crop and pan to true, which works to a certain extent. The problem with these features is that it always pans to the bottom and one must scroll up before they can pan up. How does one fix this?

    Is it just me or the Photo Galleria isn’t working on IE?

    I saw several sites who have this solution implemented. All it’s cool in FF and Chrome, the gallery works like a charm… but on IE it either doesn’t show up at all or it just fills the window with a black background.

       I use WordPress and the WordPress Themes for almost five years and must say I’ve not found a better platform for building and managing a website. Doesn’t matter whether you’re blogging, have a store front, create a massive business site or need a basic, static website to promote your services and products – WordPress can manage it all.
      And te themes are not only good for personal use, but also for your clients, makes it easier to customize to there style.

      I figured out the problem is that it no longer supports lightbox.But lightbox was the best feature as far as we’re concerned–do you have a way of getting us a version that supports lightbox again?

      1. Graph Paper Press Avatar

        The developer of the Galleria javascript library no longer supports it as a
        free option. The developer does allow you to purchase new themes from his
        site:

        http://galleria.aino.se/themes/

        You will have to modify the plugin if you want one of those themes.

    I installed 0.3.6. It is not working in IE 6,7,8,9. Any idea how to fix it?

    1. Graph Paper Press Avatar

      Sounds like you either:

      1. Installed incorrectly
      2. Have a javascript conflict with another theme or plugin

      We have tested 7,8,9 and it works for us, so it’s likely a local issue to
      your install or a theme or plugin conflict. In that case, switch to the
      TwentyTen theme to see if that fixes it. If it does, it’s a theme conflict.
      Deactivate your plugins one by one to see if it’s a plugin conflict.

  165. Allisan Lindblom Avatar

    Just to let you know… I just upgraded and the new version is preventing me from installing any other plug-ins:

      Sounds like your web host doesn’t have FTP enabled for your site. This has
      nothing to do with our plugin, but it will effect the upgrade process for
      ALL plugins. For more info, please see this:

          Hello,

          Same problem for me.

          It appears that the function hpt_rmdirr() is defined in the plugin “Tina MVC”. If this plugin is not installed, install and updates on wordpress will fail with this error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function…”
          So you should update your plugin to have your own function to recursively delete folders (like you did for photo_galleria_copy_themes() ).
          ref here:http://svn.wp-plugins.org/tina-mvc/branches/v0.3-dev/tina_mvc/helpers/tina_mvc_admin_functions.php

      2.  Avatar

        Disable photo-galleria and the error goes away. If it is active the plugins do install you have to go to the plugin section to activate the one you just install. Not sure if it word-press 3.1.1 that did it or the latest plug in update. I get the same error on line 559.

      3. Erland Avatar

        As far as I can tell, Alexis is right that the hpt_rmdirr() function is not defined within this plugin. Can you advise where this function would need to be defined within the photo-galleria files to make installing, upgrading, etc work without errors… or release an upgrade? I don’t want to install the Tina MVC plugin just to make this work. Thanks!

        1. Erland Avatar

          SOLUTION to the hpt_rmdirr() error:
          So I figured out that if you define that function within the main photo-galleria.php file then you can install & upgrade plugins, etc without error. Copy and paste the code from this page: http://putraworks.wordpress.com/2006/02/27/php-delete-a-file-or-a-folder-and-its-contents/ inside your photo-galleria.php file, save and upload to the photo-galleria plugin folder, replacing the existing file.

          Hope this helps others.

      The problem is most likely in your theme’s jquery enqueue. Open your functions.php file and check if you find something like: “function my_jquery_enqueue…” and if it’s loading an older version of jquery below 1.7 or 1.6 not sure what’s too old but I know 1.4 doesn’t work for me. I had the same problem after upgrading but after I changed my jquery enqueue code to:

      if (!is_admin()) add_action(“wp_enqueue_scripts”, “my_jquery_enqueue”, 11);
      function my_jquery_enqueue() {
      wp_deregister_script(‘jquery’);
      wp_register_script(‘jquery’, “http” . ($_SERVER[‘SERVER_PORT’] == 443 ? “s” : “”) . “://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.1/jquery.min.js”, false, null);
      wp_enqueue_script(‘jquery’);
      }

      it worked!

      Hope that helps.

Surprising how hard it was to find a straightforward WordPress slideshow plugin that uses inherent media gallery (i.e. not requiring you to upload your images to another directory on your site).
