Monochrome Gallery

Monochrome Gallery is a free widgetized theme for WordPress packaged with an author archives page, AJAX slideshow, categorized posts with thumbnails on the homepage and a CSS framework to aid in customization.

Installation

1. Unzip the downloaded file
2. Upload the entire “Monochrome Gallery″ folder to your “/wp-content/themes/” folder
3. Log in into your WordPress control panel
4. Click the Presentation tab
5. Select the “Monochrome Gallery” screenshot

Configuration

  1. GETTING STARTED: By default, the slideshow in Monochrome Author displays the most recent posts. The number of posts displayed in the slideshow can be controlled via your WP admin panel by clicking Options > Reading. The bottom row of five posts pulls in the latest post in five different categories, which you can specify in index.php. Simply open up index.php in the Theme Editor and look for the following line:

// enter the IDs of the categories to display
    $display_categories = array(‘3′,’4′,’5′,’6’);

Change 3, 4, 5, 6 to the category id’s of the categories that you want to display. You can find your category id numbers by clicking Manage > Categories in your WP Admin Panel.

To change the final fifth category, scroll down on index.php and locate:

// enter the IDs of the categories to display
    $display_categories = array(‘7’);

    Change it as described above.

  2. PHOTOS & CUSTOM FIELDS: This theme uses custom fields to manage all photos and thumbnail photos. In your WordPress settings, you can change the dimensions on both thumbnail and medium sized photos. Change the thumbnail width to 128 px wide by 128px tall. Change the medium photo size to 575 px wide. Save the settings. WordPress will resize every photo uploaded to the dimensions described above. After uploading the photo into WordPress using the media uploader, copy the link to this thumbnail photo and paste it into the custom field value, with a key called “thumbnail.” Copy the link to the medium photo (575 pixels wide maximum) and paste it into the custom field value, with a key called “photo.” Here is a screenshot of all properly filled out fields.
  3. STYLES.CSS: Unlike most WordPress themes which plug all the css in one file called styles.css, Monochrome utilizes the Blueprint CSS framework to help separate positioning, typography, forms and what I’ll refer to as custom or Monochrome specific styles. To edit all custom Monochrome specific styles, you’ll need to edit the file style.css in your wp/wp-content/themes/monochrome/ directory.
  4. SIDEBARS: 100% Widgetized baby!
  5. COMPATIBILITY: For WordPress 2.3 and up.

  1. Hi Bryn:
I just send you a submition with a question on wheter or not, I could have more space at the top of the page, and checking your site, I found “http://wordsaloud.org/” and that is exactly what I want, I need the space to put my logo at the top, so defenetly I am getting the “Monochrome Pro”.
I also found that the new edition have “customized theme options page”, so if I get the “Monochrome Pro” now, it will come with this option????
    Thanks, for your help
    Lynnp

  2. Hi Lynn

Yes, Monochrome Pro comes with the custom theme options page. That means you will never have to modify any theme files to customize Monochrome Pro.

    Best,

    Thad

  3. It is a very beautiful and wonderful theme for the photo gallery! That’s exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much!

  4. One of the best WordPress themes that I’ve seen ever. I will surely use this theme in one of my blog sites.

  5. Love this theme!

I can’t get the images to work in the big black box or the thumbnails. Followed the 2 steps above, not sure what is wrong. Can you help?

  6. Help!

I’m trying to use your theme but the slideshow won’t work?

Could you tell me how to get it working because I really want to use your theme but will have to give up with it if you can’t tell me soon.

Please email me – my address is matthewkempster at gmail .com.

    Thank you.

  7. Hello,
I am much thankful for this great theme.Though it looks great,i think i will have to spend some time figure out how it works.

  8. Hey,

Lovely theme. Can you please explain how to make the slideshow work without pointing us to the forums where I dont even know where to begin looking 🙂
If so many people have the same problem, it would be great if you update this post with info how to fix it. Forums are saying plugins, ajax, etc. I need a simple answer

    Thanks!

  9. Hi,
May ask you about the theme, the slideshow doesn’t work.

Just like Leti, can you give me explanation, by email or here 🙂

  10. @Leti and Sunday-You probably have conflicting javascripts in your header. Deactivate plugins with javascripts and see which one it causing the slideshow to stop. But without a link to your site, it’s virtually impossible to tell one way or another.

  11. I have a quick question.
Can someone help me out? When I make a new post, even if I don’t post a picture in the post, it shows a little thumbnail square thingy. How do I get rid of that?

It looks like this in the HTML when viewing the page.

    please help me!

    Thanks a lot.

  12. Hi there, I was in the same boat as some of your other commenters – LOVE the theme, can’t get the thumbnails, pullout quote, or big slideshow to work.
I still can’t get the slideshow to work (check out buddhismmagazine.com if you have any hints – no plugins there, it’s WordPress straight out of the box). Any slideshow suggestions would be great.
BUT I’ve worked out how to get the thumnails, excerpts, and a whole lot of other things to work. Also a live demo of a great one working.
Rather than cram your comments box (my cheats are a whole page long), I’ve posted them on my wordpress theme blog (wordpresstheme.me)
You can read the section on how I got monochrome gallery to work at http://www.wordpresstheme.me/monochrome-fix (I’ll post how to fix the slideshow when I get that sorted too).
    Thanks for a great theme!
    😀

  13. Love this theme!

I can’t get the images to work in the big black box or the thumbnails. Followed the 2 steps above, not sure what is wrong. Can you help?

  14. i love this theme and already use it,
but i found that if i change the permalink other than default, the link won’t work.

  15. Well I am trying to use the same theme on my blog but the thumbnail section is giving some trouble. Thumbnail is of same size as of photo

  16. Could you make another screenshot of the custom fields box that shows the end of the image and thumbnail value boxes? I can’t get the code to display the proper sizes for the pictures and just wanted to see how you had it written out.

    Thanks so much!

  17. Here’s a fix for the slide show!!!

If it does not work, check what plug-ins you have activated:

for me the “Lightbox 2” image plug-in was causing the problem.

As i deactivated it, the slide show on first page was back! Hope this helps you, folks!

  18. This theme is wonderful. Originally, I was using Monochrome Author but wanted to show more visuals on my blog. I’ve never been good with coding, but I love the theme so much that I spent 3 hours trying to figure out what went where … and how to get everything into the right place. It has been worth every minute.

Thanks again for the great themes! I’ve spread the word to a couple of friends who mentioned that they loved Monochrome Author and this one as well. Hopefully you’ll be getting praise from them soon ;P

    Thanks again!

  19. I’m having trouble getting ANY images to show anywhere (both in posts and in slideshow)

Another user disabled lightbox to get them to work… I didn’t have lightbox, all I have is akismet, bastats, wp-cache, yahoo blog statistics, and subscribe2.

This is the first time I’ve ever installed my own theme and so far I’m really proud of how easy it’s been, your instructions were so helpful.

The only other thing I didn’t understand was how to change the dimensions of the thumbnails, and why my custom fields box doesn’t look like yours, maybe because my wp version is 2.3.3 and my host won’t let me upgrade- unless I just haven’t figured out a way around it (yahoo hosting)

thank you, I’m moving on to try step 3 now!

    1. Are your images visible through the ‘media’ tab?
I had a similar problem, until I found out I was uploading my pictures (Media) into the wrong folder. Therefore WP did not find or display them.

      A solution:

In ‘settings’, ‘miscellaneous’, you have to select the default folder, normally: wp-content/uploads

For the dimensions: instruction is a bit confusing. You have to select 575 px in both ‘max width’ and ‘max heighth’. Otherwise you will get large dark areas around your pictures.

  20. Hello,

Thank you very much for this thme. But I just cant mKE IT WORK LIKE IN YOUR SAMPLES. iT JUST DOESNT LOOK LIKE THAT, i AM ABSOLUTELY NEW IN THIS. bUT i SPEND 2 DAYS TRYING TO WORK IT OUT AND NOTHING HAPPENING.

    1. Can you tell my why I cant get thumbnails and flash preview work?

    2. Or could you send me zip package of your Preview Theme (with all images etc) So I would just change content and images straight in the file manager.

Or If it is all because Im green, please give me some advice or tutorial to read. I am desperate now =)

    thanks alot

  21. Hi,
I can’t seem to get to the download buttons for any of your free themes. It always asks me to sign up for a paid membership, which I can’t do at the moment. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Jim

  22. hi,
    i like this theme..
Is it possible to have the slideshow with the most recent posts from one category?

    Thanks!

  23. Hi,

I spent some time implementing the “Monochrome Gallery” over the weekend. Generally it is a really great theme and works very well. I did however discover the following problems:

    1. The pullsown menus on the inital page disappear behind the slideshow – I have no idea how to correct this.
    2. The slideshow on the initial page does not work when Lightbox2 is installed and active. – I used a different lightbox in the end.

@mensa- this is possible. To do this, I did the following:

    a) In the index.html for the theme, I added the line

    after the .
This queries only posts that belong to the category “show”.

    b) All posts in the category “show” require the special field “photo” with the link to the image to be shown.

    Hope that helps!

    Mark

  24. How do I get categories to show up in order on the bottom – also, how do I get a thumbnail to show like in the demo?

I added categories but they don’t repeat on the bottom with the most recent post for the category.

    Please help. Thanks!

  25. Hi,
I am unable to get the categories to show up in the bottom of the blog. I only have 5 categories so they all should show up. However, only 2 showed up.

This was working before but after I deleted 3 categories and added 3 new ones, the new categories doesn’t seem to work. The 2 that are working are the original ones that I didn’t delete/rename.

It appears that only the latest post is showed in the bottom of the blog and not the previous 5 post.

    Any help appreciated.

  26. I really don’t get how the slideshow works? Is it pulling from a directory? I have 3 years worth of posts, I don’t want to have to rebuild.

Can I choose a specific series of photos?

  27. I would like a little help modifying the registered user notice that is emailed to the admin – I want to add the IP of the user to the notice … can you give me the steps necessary?

    Thanks for any help…

  34. Hi, I have two very basic questions:
    where is the
    Manage > Categories
option on the wp panel? I don´t see it.
And also, how do you access the theme editor?
